Looking at this year's distortions: Zerobias data and TPC shorts

TPC Zerobias Data / SpaceCharge

Here's a first look at TPC zerobias data from this year. The data (~10k events) shows a distribution consistent with collisions without significant backgrounds in both the east and west halves of the TPC, and that the two halves are about the same. This data was acquired at ZDC coincidence rates of ~2.2k.
TPC East charge distribution
TPC West charge distribution

Plot details:

  • Top left plot is projection of measured charge vs. radius; black is all, red is on tracks
  • Top righ is same vs. phi
  • Middle left is measured charge vs. R and phi.
  • Middle right is same minus 1/r^n fit in top left plot
  • Bottom right is same, slightly different view.
  • Red hists/curves are for hits on tracks, but tracking in this data is questionable, so just ignore.
  • Sinusoidal model used to fit the azimuthal distrubution is not a strict expectation; for insight only. I have corrected for acceptance (live pad areas) in each bin.

Fluctuations in azimuth are well below 10%; compare that to 2004 data where notable backgrounds were seen in specific phi regions:
    2004 Day 46
    2004 Day 50
This is GOOD NEWS! But I should check this again for higher ZDC rates.

    TPC Field Cage Short

IFC East field cage short has steadily gotten worse over the course of running so far:

Horizontal axis is seconds since 2007-01-01 00:00:00. Vertical axis is missing resistance in MOhms inside the TPC (the measured current is turned into a resistance and corrected for the external resistance added outside the TPC). Red points are samples taken during runs (black are outside of runs). Sampling rate is generally every 15 seconds. Observed spread is dominated by real fluctuations, not sampling error.

We are watching this closely as it is assumed that this fluctuating electrical short is between two rings where there is a 3 MOhm resistor (see Field Cage Shorts). If it significantly exceeds 3 MOhms, then we do not understand what is going on.
