Is ODBMS Realistic?
Considerations and concerns:
- Adopted by BaBar, ATLAS, CMS, Alice (all via RD45), NA45; others (eg. Belle, Fermilab run II) seriously evaluating it
- Implementation based on Objectivity in all cases. Best requirements match and highly receptive to HENP needs (capability, fixes/improvements, licensing).
- Timescale major concern. BaBar is working on Objectivity deployment in ‘98.
- Scalability. BaBar is 1/5 of STAR’s data volume, so we must test scalability (judged not a significant risk factor by RD45)
- Objectivity 5 should support a 328TB database with 5GB file size (2^16 5GB databases)
- Serial I/O comparable (~.3?) to flat file rate; Objectivity design with thin server mainly for lock management (no data bottleneck) and direct client access to data should have good parallel scalability (one of the first things to test, to be sure)
- HPSS integration now exists
- Single vendor risk. ODMG is partial amelioration (full functionality not covered). Concern over data in proprietary format.
- Enables integration with Geant4, LHC++, other developments using Objectivity
