Current Status of Event Store Considerations
Objectivity credibly meets the requirements, based on compilation of the work of others (mainly RD45, BaBar)
ROOT hasn’t been demonstrated to credibly meet the requirements
‘Comfort level’ with Objectivity: unease is universal
- BaBar and RD45 demonstrate that hands-on experience exposes problems requiring fixes, workarounds, or reworked designs
- we need to dive in now and confront what we find: make it work or expose the need for another solution
- Lack of Solaris/Intel port must be faced
- Bribery? NT? Linux? NT+Unix?
- STAR is porting offline software to NT and evaluating NT+Unix (UWIN)
- NT actually solves some problems present on Solaris/Intel: availability of AFS and the preferred batch manager, LSF, but concerns over scalability
- Commercial trend line is clear, however: growing NT intrusion upon Unix
- VMS to Unix revisited
- Corporate turbulence and single-vendor risk
- Data stored in proprietary format
